Last night was the WORLD PREMIERE of the the superlative EYETHINK PICTURES' concert film of the Kinsey Sicks. For those sorry souls not in the know, the Kinseys are 'American's favorite dragapella Barbershop Quartet. The concert show, entitled 'I Wanna Be A Republican' is the culmination of two nights filming here in the city at the Broadway Studios in North Beach, In short, IT WAS AMAZING!
Now just a little background on the show. First off I'm a little biased since I was involved in the concerts as a try-hard plummy usher both nights, and more importantly Eyethink Pics is headed up by two of my dear friends. But, you know even though I've known the project since conception (it was something to do with Winnie's turkey baster...) I remember being stunned by the professionalism and convinction that my friends had with the events. I've seen a lot of concert films and even the most reknowned entertainers can be rendered amatuerish by the way the performance is filmed and the way the resulting film is cut. They also tend to have an overriding detachment about them. This film my friends, is something else entirely. You feel as if you are actually in the presence of the girls from start to finish and the energy translates to a movie audience in a way I never thought it could.
I've been thinking about this all morning, and I think it comes down to the fact that my Ken and Alonzo, Eyethinks Directors know the show inside out, and if ever the girls need a 5th and 6th part harmony (does that even happen?) These guys could be straight in there, at least in terms of lyrics :) The Kinsey's dialogue is sharp and hilarious and the singing is incredible and testimony to the amazing vocals, choreography and talent. On a filmic level, since the Eyethink crew have been following the girls over the last 9 months they've seen a lot of the show, A LOT. But this is the reason that the concert film is wigged-head and sequined-shoulders above anything else I've seen. Every reaction and nuance, every sly facial tick and comedy pause is lovingly imortalized on the film and believe me you don't miss a thing. In fact I saw the show twice and picked up missed laughs aplenty. I feel it's that above all else that makes you feel as if you're living the moment with us all in the live show. At least, I think a packed out and rowdy Castro theater would agree?
Now, I'm not party to the knowing the future plans for the film, I hope it'll be HUGE, but if you're one of the intrigued, amused or simply republican that missed the show, you'd do well to check out the boys at www.eyethinkpictures.com and drop them an email. Maybe even contacting the powers that be at the Castro Theater for a repeat screening - www.thecastrotheater.com - Who knows we might get to see it there again?
Congratulations to Ben, Jeff, Irwin and Chris (aka Rachel, Trixie, Winnie and Trampolina) My love, thanks and best wishes go out to the Director Ken Bielenberg and Producer Alonzo Ruvalcaba for letting us be a part of this amazing journey. Enjoy the Spotlight guys, you your crew deserve every bit of it!
