I got a fantastic early birthday pressie yesterday from my wonderful friends Patty and Barb - Nikon 8x40 So being the nerdish bird-watching type, proud to be a twicher! Taking them out for a spin and with the hope that I'd catch a glimpse of the nesting Red-tailed Hawks, I went out to the Canyon at about 3.30 in the afternoon. Thats about as broad as daylight can get isn't it? Imagine my surprise then when I stumbled across an entire family of Great Horned Owls. Not only that but I got within 18 feet of a sleepy looking Mother Owl. Actually quite freaky when that close and you've got the intense stare. The mother was doing her best to wean the near fully grown and huge offspring, at one point scanning the undergrowth abouth 30 feet away and pouncing on the tiniest lizerd you've ever seen. The noise the owlets made at that morsel was most unnerving. Anyhoo, I had the chance to walk home a grab a camera so check out the pix. Not that great since its digital taken through the lens of the binocs. PS. Saw the Hawks too!
